Does your child speak a language other than English fluently? Can they read, write, and understand that language as well? For the first time ever, Finn Hill is hosting the World Language Credit by Proficiency test! Since this is brand new to our middle school, here are some facts to see if this is something you could be interested in for your student: Who can earn World Language Credit by Proficiency? Any student in LWSD in grades 8 through 12. Can Middle School students take the test? Yes. 8th graders can take the test to meet competency requirements and HS credits. Colleges may differ on whether they will accept the credits earned in 8th grade. What are the benefits of taking the World Language Proficiency Test? Students can earn up to four high school credits depending on the level of proficiency demonstrated in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students may also qualify for earning the WA State Seal of Biliteracy. Which languages are eligible for credit? Assessments are available in many languages that have written and spoken forms, as well as American Sign Language. Every effort will be made to provide an assessment in the requested language. How are credits determined? Credits are awarded based on the lowest level of proficiency demonstrated across the skill areas, so it is important that students have strong skills in all four areas. How much does testing cost? The first language test comes at no cost to the student. If a student chooses to retest, there will be a fee based on the cost of the assessment (typically between $25 - $185). When is the test? Thursday, April 25th, at Finn Hill Middle School at 8 am. Where can I find out more information about the test? You can learn more about the test and register to take it on the LWSD website at https://www.lwsd.org/schools/high-school/high-school-guide/world-language-credit-by-proficiency .
